In the early days, Chauncy I. Jerabek, a self-taught horticulturist, worked as head gardener at the Scripps ranch. He brought a four-horse supply wagon to work the land in the native chaparral. The ranch had already been planted with pines and eucalyptus trees, but Jerabek cleared it of the chaparral and planted more than 20,000 trees. Check it out here!
