Warning Signs of a Dangerous Tree

Some hazards are obvious, like a split trunk after a windstorm. Others build quietly for years. These are the signs we look for on every property visit:

A new or worsening lean: Especially if the soil on the opposite side is cracked or lifting, which means the root plate is moving.
Cracks and splits: Vertical cracks in the trunk or where two large stems meet can open suddenly under load.
Weak unions: Two trunks of similar size joined in a tight “V” with bark pinched between them are prone to splitting.
Decay and cavities: Hollow sections, soft wood, and mushrooms or shelf fungi at the base point to internal rot.
Dead tops and hangers: Dead leaders and broken limbs caught in the canopy can drop without warning.
Root damage: Trenching, grading or new concrete within the root zone can destabilize a tree that looked fine for decades.
Fire or beetle damage: Scorched trunks and pines hit by bark beetles lose strength quickly, a common problem across the north state.

One sign on its own doesn’t always mean removal. Several signs together, or any sign on a tree that could reach your home, is worth a professional look.

How We Take Down High-Risk Trees

Hazardous trees rarely come down in one piece. Leaning, cracked or decayed wood behaves unpredictably, so we remove it in controlled sections.

Plan the drop zones: We map where every piece will land and what needs protecting, from rooflines to septic lids.
Climb or lift: Depending on the tree’s condition, a climber or our bucket lift reaches the canopy. We don’t put a climber on wood we don’t trust.
Rig and lower: Limbs and trunk sections are roped and lowered rather than dropped when anything valuable is underneath.
Fell what’s left: The remaining trunk comes down in a direction chosen for open ground.
Clean up: Wood and brush are hauled or chipped and the yard is raked clean. Stump grinding is available the same visit.

Can a hazardous tree be saved instead of removed?
