Stump Removal You Can Count On

Sometimes grinding a stump down is not enough. If you are putting a shed, a slab, a fence post, a driveway or a new tree exactly where the old one stood, you do not just need the stump out of sight. You need the ground itself back.

That is what stump removal does. Tree of Righteousness handles full stump and root removal for homeowners and property owners across Redding, California, taking the stump out of the ground rather than reducing it in place.

Stump Removal and Stump Grinding are not the Same Job

These two get used interchangeably all the time, and the difference matters, because one of them costs less and the other one gives you clear ground. It is worth knowing which one you actually need before you call anybody.

Stump grinding

Stump grinding uses a machine with a cutting wheel to chew the stump down below ground level. The visible stump disappears, the grindings usually stay on site as fill, and the root system stays in the soil where it slowly breaks down over the following years. It is faster, it is cheaper, and it is far easier on the surrounding lawn.

Stump removal

Full removal pulls the stump and the main root ball out of the ground entirely. It takes equipment and room to work, it disturbs a much wider area, and it leaves a hole that has to be backfilled. In exchange, the ground underneath is genuinely clear rather than full of decomposing wood.

For most yards, grinding is the right answer. Removal is for the cases where something is going into that exact spot, or where the roots themselves are the problem.

When full removal is the right call

  • Something is being built there. A slab, footing, shed pad, retaining wall or paved surface should not sit over a decaying root mass, because the ground settles unevenly as that wood breaks down.
  • A new tree is going in the same place. An old root ball takes up the room the new roots need. If you are planning tree planting on the same spot, clearing it properly first gives the replacement a real chance.
  • The ground is being regraded. If soil levels are changing across the area, leftover roots make it difficult to get a consistent, stable surface.
  • The roots are causing damage. Roots lifting a walkway, pushing into a foundation or running through a septic or irrigation line do not stop being a problem when the top of the stump is gone.
  • Disease or persistent sprouting. Some species keep sending up shoots from the root system for years. Some root diseases stay in the wood left behind.
  • Trenching, fencing or utility work is planned. Anything that has to go through that ground is easier and cheaper with the roots gone first.

When grinding is enough

If the goal is a tidy yard, easier mowing, and an area you can cover with soil and grass, stump grinding will do it for less money and with less disruption to everything around it. There is no advantage to paying for full removal on a stump that is only in the way visually.

If you are not sure which one your situation calls for, say so when you call. We would rather tell you that grinding is enough than sell you the bigger job.

What the Work Involves

  1. Request a free estimate.

Tell us where the stump is, roughly how big the tree was, and what you are planning to do with the space. That last part is usually what decides between grinding and removal.

  2. We look at access first.

Full removal needs machinery close to the stump. We check how equipment gets in, what the gate width and slope are, and what sits nearby in the ground and overhead.

  3. Get scheduled.

You get a price and a scope before anything is booked.

  4. The stump comes out.

The stump and main root mass are excavated and taken out, the area is cleaned up, and the hole is backfilled to whatever level you have asked for.

What affects the job

  • Species and root habit. A shallow, spreading root system behaves very differently from a deep taproot.
  • Stump diameter and tree age. Both scale the size of what has to come out of the ground.
  • How long it has been there. A stump that has partly rotted comes out differently from one cut last month.
  • Access. On this kind of work, access matters as much as size. A large stump in an open field is often an easier job than a small one behind a narrow gate.
  • What is around and under it. Irrigation, utilities, septic components, hardscape, fence lines and nearby trees all constrain how the work is done.
  • Soil condition. Redding clay behaves one way in February and another way in August.

What you are left with

Full removal leaves a hole, and it is usually bigger than people expect, because the root ball is wider than the stump was. Backfilling is part of the conversation before work starts, not an afterthought.

Depending on what you are doing next, the area might be filled with native soil and compacted, filled and left slightly proud to allow for settling, or left open because something is being poured or set in it. Tell us the plan for the space and the finish gets matched to it.

Stump Removal After Tree Work

Most stumps we are called about are left over from a tree that came out earlier, sometimes years earlier. If the tree is still standing, it is generally simpler to handle both together, and tree removal and stump work can be quoted on the same visit.

The same applies where a tree has died and not yet come down. Dead tree removal and stump removal often make sense as one job rather than two visits, particularly when equipment access is the difficult part.

Serving Redding and the surrounding area

We handle stump removal throughout Redding, California and the communities around it, including Anderson, Cottonwood, Palo Cedro, Bella Vista, Happy Valley, Shasta Lake, Igo, Millville, Shingletown, Lakehead and Red Bluff.

Heavy machinery moves large trunk pieces during tree removal.

Common Questions About Stump Removal

Is stump removal more expensive than grinding?

Yes, usually noticeably so. It takes larger equipment, more time, and more site work, and it produces material that has to go somewhere. That is why it is worth being clear about whether you actually need it.

Can you remove a stump close to my house or fence?

Sometimes, and sometimes not. Proximity to a foundation, wall or hardscape can make full excavation a bad idea, in which case grinding is usually the safer approach. We look at it on site before committing either way.

Do you take the stump away?

That is part of the estimate. Some properties want everything hauled off, others would rather keep the wood. Tell us which when we walk the site.

Will removing the stump damage my lawn?

There will be disturbance, and more of it than with grinding. The affected area is wider than the stump and equipment has to reach it. We work to keep that footprint as tight as the job allows, and we will tell you honestly what the area is going to look like afterwards.

Can I plant a tree in the same spot afterwards?

That is one of the main reasons to do full removal rather than grinding. Once the old root mass is out and the hole is backfilled with clean soil, the spot is genuinely usable again.

How long does it take?

It depends far more on access and root spread than on stump size alone. We give you a realistic answer at the estimate rather than a number over the phone.
