Tree Planting You Can Count On

Most of what we do is take trees down. Every so often the job is the opposite one, and someone wants a tree put in: a replacement for one that had to come out, shade on the west side of a house, or a screen along a property line that will still be there in twenty years.

Tree of Righteousness handles tree planting for homeowners and property owners around Redding, California. It is not the bulk of our work, and we will say so plainly, but the years spent removing trees that were planted in the wrong place are exactly what makes the planting worth getting right.

Why Placement Decides Everything

Almost every hazardous tree we take out was planted by someone who meant well. A tree that looked reasonable as a five-gallon nursery plant ends up twenty feet from a roofline, under a service drop, over a septic field, or crowded against three others that all went in the same weekend.

None of that is visible on planting day. It shows up fifteen or twenty years later as a removal bill. So before anything goes in the ground, the conversation is about where, and what, rather than how deep.

What gets looked at

  • Mature size, not nursery size. The question is what the canopy and root spread will be at full growth, and whether there is room for it.
  • Distance from structures. Roofs, foundations, driveways, walls, fences and outbuildings all set limits.
  • What is overhead. Power and service lines decide what can be planted underneath them, and it is rarely the tree people had in mind.
  • What is underground. Septic systems, leach fields, irrigation and utility runs are not places for root systems.
  • Sun, slope and soil. Redding summers are long and hot, and a lot of ground around here is heavy clay. Both narrow what will actually thrive.
  • Water. How the tree gets watered for its first few summers is part of the decision, not an afterthought.
  • Defensible space. On properties where fire clearance matters, spacing between trees and distance from structures is worth thinking about at planting rather than later.

Right tree, right place

We are a tree service rather than a nursery, so we are not here to sell you a particular species. What we can do is tell you honestly what a given tree will become on your property, and whether the spot you have in mind will still work when it gets there.

Some of the common conversations:

  • A fast-growing shade tree gives you shade sooner and usually gives you weaker wood and a shorter life. That trade is sometimes worth making and sometimes not.
  • Planting for shade works best on the south and west sides, where the afternoon heat actually is.
  • A screen along a boundary needs species and spacing chosen together, or in ten years it is a row of crowded trees competing with each other.
  • Replacing a tree in the same spot works far better once the old root mass is out. That is one of the main reasons to choose stump removal over grinding.

When to Plant Around Redding

The dormant season, roughly late autumn through winter, is generally the better window in the north state. It gives the root system months to establish while the weather is cool and wet, so the tree meets its first real summer with something under it.

Planting in late spring or summer is possible, but it puts a new, limited root system straight into triple-digit heat, and the watering demand goes up sharply as a result. If there is no reason to rush, waiting for cooler weather is usually the better call.

How the work goes

  1. Request a free estimate.

Tell us what you are hoping for: shade, screening, a replacement, or filling a gap. Photos of the spot help.

  2. We look at the site.

Sun, slope, soil, overhead lines, underground services, distance to structures, and what else is already growing nearby.

  3. We talk through options.

What suits the spot, what it will look like in ten years, and what it will need from you in the meantime.

  4. The tree goes in.

Planted at the correct depth, backfilled, watered in, and staked only if it genuinely needs it.

A note on depth and staking

Two of the most common causes of a young tree failing are being planted too deep and being staked too tightly for too long. A tree set below its root flare struggles for years without an obvious reason. A tree held rigid never develops the trunk strength it needs to stand on its own. Both are avoidable, and both are worth mentioning because they are so often done wrong.

What Happens After we Leave

The first two or three summers decide whether a tree survives, and most of that is watering. A new tree needs deep, infrequent watering at the root ball rather than a light daily spray, and it needs it through the hottest part of the year when everything else in the yard is also asking for water.

We will tell you what the tree needs and how to tell whether it is getting it. We do not offer a survival guarantee, and we would be careful of anyone who does, because what happens over those first summers is mostly out of our hands and largely in yours.

If a tree already on your property is struggling and you want to know whether it is worth keeping, a tree health assessment is the more useful place to start.

Common Questions About Tree Planting

Do you supply the tree?

We are not a nursery. Depending on what you want, we can either work with a tree you have sourced or help you figure out what to look for and where. Ask at the estimate.

How big a tree can you plant?

The larger the tree, the heavier the root ball and the more equipment and access it takes. Smaller stock also tends to establish faster and catch up quickly. We will tell you honestly where the practical limit is for your site.

Can you plant where a tree was removed?

Yes, and it works much better if the old root ball is out first. See stump removal.

How many trees can go in at once?

Several, if the spacing makes sense. This is worth planning rather than improvising, because trees planted too close together become a thinning job later.

Will you guarantee the tree lives?

No. Establishment depends on watering, weather and site conditions over several years. We will plant it correctly and tell you exactly what it needs, and we will be straight with you about the odds if the spot is a difficult one.

Do you do this often?

Less often than removals and trimming, and we would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise. It is real work we take on, and the estimate is free either way.
